Cummins B6.7 & L9 Spin-On Fuel Filter
Prepare & Safety
Park on level ground, engage parking brake. Ignition off, allow engine to cool 30 min. Place drain pan beneath filter housing. Clean surrounding area.
Drain Filter Housing
Open drain valve at bottom of filter housing. Allow fuel to drain completely. Disconnect WIF sensor connector if equipped.
Remove Old Filter
Using 28mm socket, rotate filter cap counterclockwise to remove. Lift out old element and discard — do not reuse O-ring.
Install New Filter
Lubricate new O-ring with clean diesel or engine oil. Install Steinberg FF001 element. Reinstall cap hand-tight then tighten with socket.
Prime Fuel System
Key to ON position (do not crank). Wait 20-30 sec for lift pump to cycle. Key to OFF. Repeat 5-10 times. You will hear lift pump hum during each cycle.
Start Engine & Check for Leaks
Start engine and idle for 3-5 minutes. Inspect filter housing and connections for leaks. If leaks present, shut down immediately and retighten.
Detroit DD15 & DD13 Fuel Water Separator
Locate & Prepare
DD15 uses three fuel filters on the fuel module (driver's side firewall). Park on level ground, ignition off. Place drain pan beneath module.
Drain Fuel Module
Open drain valve on fuel module and allow to drain completely before removing housings.
Remove & Replace All Filters
Unscrew all filter housings counterclockwise. Remove old elements and O-rings. Install new FF003 elements. Lubricate O-rings with clean diesel. Reinstall.
Prime the System
Use hand priming pump on fuel module (or 70 PSI priming pump for EPA2021 engines). Pump until firm resistance. Open bleed valve — when fuel flows steadily without bubbles, system is primed. Close valve.
Start & Verify
Start engine, idle 5 minutes. Check all connections for leaks. Clear any active fault codes with diagnostic tool.
Volvo D11 / D13 / D16 Primary Fuel Filter
Shut Off Fuel & Prepare
Locate manual fuel shut-off valve and turn to CLOSED. Park on level ground, ignition off. Place drain pan beneath primary fuel filter housing on left side of engine.
Clean & Remove Old Filter
Clean area around housing. Using filter wrench, rotate primary filter counterclockwise. Allow residual fuel to drain into pan.
Install New Filter
Apply thin film of clean diesel to new O-ring on Steinberg FF010. Screw on by hand until gasket contacts base, then tighten.
Prime the System
Turn fuel shut-off valve back to OPEN. Use hand priming pump near filter housing. Pump 10-15 times minimum until firm pressure felt.
Start & Check Codes
Start engine, idle 3-5 minutes. Inspect for leaks. Check instrument cluster for fault codes and clear as needed.
PACCAR MX-13 & MX-11 Fuel Filter Kit (EPA2017+)
Locate Filter Module
MX-13 fuel filter module is on left side of engine (driver's seat view). Contains fuel water separator and main fuel filter. Place drain pan beneath.
Drain Filter Module
Open drain valve on bottom of fuel filter module. Allow to fully drain before removal. Critical for EPA2021 engines.
Remove & Replace Both Elements
Remove both suction-side and pressure-side filter elements. Install FF016 kit elements. Lubricate O-rings with clean diesel.
Prime Using Hand Pump
Use manual hand primer pump on module. Pump firmly until resistance increases significantly. Open bleeder screw — when fuel flows steadily without bubbles, close screw.
Start Engine & Verify
Start engine, idle 5 minutes. Check fuel module and all connections for leaks. Clear any fuel system codes after successful startup.
Cummins ISX / X15 Full-Flow Lube Filter
Prepare & Drain
Engine off and cooled. Place drain pan beneath oil filter housing on driver's side of engine block. Clean area around filter base.
Remove Old Filter
Using 93mm filter wrench, rotate counterclockwise. Allow oil to drain fully. Inspect base — ensure old gasket came off with filter.
Install New Filter
Apply thin film of clean engine oil to gasket of new Steinberg FO001. Screw on by hand until gasket contacts surface, then tighten.
Verify Oil Level & Start
Check and top off engine oil level. Start engine, idle 2-3 minutes. Check oil pressure gauge. Inspect filter base for leaks. Recheck oil level after 5 minutes.
Volvo D11 / D13 / D16 & Mack MP7 / MP8 Lube Filter
Warm Engine Slightly & Prepare
Slightly warm (not hot) engine allows oil to drain more completely. Engine off. Place drain pan beneath oil filter housing. Clean area around filter.
Remove Old Filter
Using filter wrench, rotate counterclockwise. Allow oil to drain completely from housing.
Install New Filter
Apply thin film of clean engine oil to gasket of new Steinberg FO007. Screw on by hand until gasket contacts base, then tighten firmly.
Check Oil Level & Start
Check engine oil level and top off if needed. Start engine, idle 2-3 minutes. Check for leaks at filter base. Verify oil pressure on gauge or display.
Freightliner Cascadia 2018+ Primary Air Filter
Locate Air Filter Housing
Air filter housing is on left (driver's) side of engine compartment, above and behind cab. 2018+ Cascadia features tool-free access design.
Open Housing & Remove Old Filter
Release housing latches (no tools needed on 2018+ models). Lift cover and pull out old primary air filter element. Note orientation before removal.
Inspect Housing & Install New Filter
Wipe any debris from housing interior with clean dry cloth. Install new Steinberg FA020 in same orientation as original. Ensure all sealing surfaces are properly seated.
Close Housing & Verify
Close and latch housing securely. Check restriction indicator gauge — should reset with new filter. Start engine and verify no air filter warning on dash.
Before You Start
Always Use a Torque Wrench
Over-tightening is the #1 cause of premature filter failure and housing cracks. Under-tightening causes leaks. Follow the specified torque for every filter.
Pre-Lubricate the Gasket
Apply a thin coat of clean engine oil or diesel fuel to the gasket seal before installation on all spin-on filters. This ensures a proper, leak-free seal.
Prime the Fuel System
After replacing any fuel filter, always prime the system before cranking. Dry-starting a high-pressure common rail system can permanently damage the fuel pump and injectors.
Follow Change Intervals
Don't skip scheduled maintenance. Contamination accumulates faster than it's visible. A plugged filter restricts flow before any warning light activates.
Recommended Change Intervals
Based on OEM service manuals. Actual intervals may vary based on duty cycle, fuel quality, and operating conditions.
| Filter Type | Normal Conditions | Severe Duty | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel | 15,000–25,000 mi / 500 hrs | 10,000–15,000 mi / 300 hrs | More frequent if water-in-fuel indicator activates |
| Oil | 15,000 mi / 250 hrs | 10,000 mi / 150 hrs | Use oil analysis to extend intervals safely |
| Air | 50,000 mi / visual inspection | 25,000 mi | Replace when restriction indicator trips |
| Cabin Air | Annual / 12 months | 6 months | More often in dusty or high-pollen environments |
| Air Dryer | Annual / 12 months | 6 months | Inspect desiccant colour — replace when saturated |
Installation Guides for Other Filters
Filters not listed above follow the same installation procedure as the guide for their engine platform. The steps — preparation, draining, gasket lubrication, installation, and priming — are identical across all spin-on filters for a given engine. The only values that differ are the torque specification and change interval, which are printed on each filter box and listed in your engine service manual.
