Is the DD15 a good engine?

Yes. The Detroit DD15 is one of the two engines (alongside the Cummins X15) that dominate the North American Class 8 long-haul market for a reason. It produces 400 to 505 horsepower across its trim levels, makes torque cleanly between 1,250 and 1,750 RPM where a long-haul driver actually operates, and has earned a reputation for 1.2 to 1.5 million miles of useful service when maintained on factory intervals. The Gen 5 update in 2020 addressed lingering complaints about the doser injector and EGR cooler that plagued earlier generations. The remaining weak point is the same as on every modern Class 8 diesel: the DPF and SCR aftertreatment system, which lives or dies on fuel and oil cleanliness upstream. Get the filtration right and the DD15 outlasts the truck.
